The Power of Now- Eckhart Tolle
Book Info:
The Power of Now: A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment by Eckhart Tolle. Available as eBook, paperback (236 pages), and audiobook (7 hours, 37 minutes).
“Nothing ever happened in the past; it happened in the Now. Nothing will ever happen in the future, it will happen in the Now. … Just as the moon has no light of its own, but can only reflect the light of the sun, so are the past and future only pale reflections of the light, power, and reality of the eternal present. Their reality is “borrowed” from the Now.”
Summary:
This book covers a wide array of spiritual and meditative theory, in question and answer format. The author describes living in a depressive fog for almost 30 years, having a spiritual/mental breakdown which led to a powerful awakening with a new sense of peace and clarity. Three major takeaways are: 1. While thoughts are not an enemy, I am not, in fact, my thoughts. 2. The present moment is the most important moment, because it is the one we are in. The third takeaway stems from the second. 3. The mind dwells almost constantly on the past and future – not on the present moment we are living in. This does not create security or control, only suffering.
Things to Know:
- This book is meaty and deep. It is meant to be read and digested in short chunks, so we don’t recommend trying to read it all at once.
- Much of the book is relatable, but there are parts that are very cerebral and go beyond what the casual learner may be looking for.
- This is a major paradigm shifting book, so prepare to have your worldview turned on its head. There are many one-liners that make you stop and think.
The Bottom Line:
If you have an interest in meditation, mindfulness, the law of attraction, positive psychology, or more peace in your own life, you will most likely find this book worthwhile and possibly even life-changing. If you are looking for a breezy fast read, this is probably not the book you are looking for.
